While completing my MSW - as a case worker intern for the Minnesota AIDS Project in the middle 90's I attended more funerals in nine months than most folks experience in three lifetimes. The more memorable statements Clients shared as we navigated their hospice journey was their thoughts concerning time.

When you know you have little time left, how you choose to use that time speaks volumes to lessons earned and yet to learn.

My Clients wanted to spend their time with their family of creation - people who unconditionally loved them - just as they are. They had little or no time for their blood relations who they knew thought little of them - if at all. Sadly, too often, based on legalities concerning who has rights and who didn't concerning my clients well being - my clients had to face people they never wanted to see.

If you haven't taken the time to complete the necessary legal documents:

1. Power of Attorney for Health Care / Living Will

2. DNR's (do not resuscitate orders)

3. Wills / Estate planning - regardless of how little you may have....

now is the time.

To be denied being with those you love most during your final days - absolutely heart breaking.
