One of the more interesting aspects of the proliferation of the internet is the leveling of the end-user playing field one industry at a time.
Examples:
1. Airlines. In 1980 if you wanted an airline ticket you had two options. A) The airlines. B) A travel agency. Today we have dozens of online sites price-shopping for us for the lowest fare.
2. Print publications. Vanity press operators are as old as publishing houses. From a professional standpoint one wasn't considered a published author until you signed with a major publishing house. Today, self-publishing is slowly chipping away the foundations of gate-keeper publishing houses. Today, a self-published author enjoys as much professional credit as an author who shares royalties with their agent(s).
3. Entertainment industry. Today a creative soul willing to invest a few thousand dollars into a beefed-up computer can create audios and videos of equal of vastly improved quality of records and movies produced just a decade ago.
As the internet dissolves gate-keepers (to include teaching institutions) we invite a renascence unlike anything we've experienced!
