Living on an island (Oahu, Hawai’i) I’m often dazed by the rows upon rows upon rows of pallets of bottled water in most big-box stores. During our recent hurricane Lane scare I witnessed these rows vanish and reappear at amazing rates. Half of those bottles will end up in the landfill even though consumers pay a .05¢ returnable deposit and .01¢ admin fee on each bottle. Given the highly optional recycling attitude on all islands dumbfounds me. There’s far less emphasis on recycling here than in California, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota (places I called home for a bit).
Now what about comfort regarding Big Pharma? Easier to pop a pill than do the hard work of actually dealing with doubt, guilt, shame, worry, drama, dogma (etc.). Right?
