K.C. you remind me of the time I both volunteered for and eventually trained folks on our local LGBTQ+ helpline. Part of our training included one of the hardest tasks required of us.

Listening.

Just listening.

No judging. No problem solving. No fixing.

If asked for solutions, brainstorm time! No preaching. No, “I would . . .”

Do our best to make sure our caller feels heard!

True, we had guidelines to immediately initiate in the event of determining a caller is in immediate danger of harming themself or others. RARELY did I / we have to follow those guidelines - thankfully.

When I was asked to help train volunteers I reminded trainees of a brutal fact concerning suicides.

Those ready, willing and able to end their life - rarely call out for help in the moment they decide they're done. The person you’re talking to is reaching for a lifeline. Take a breath. Panic? Not helpful.

K.C. your story shines light on your awareness that while you felt ready to end it all (pedal to the metal) another part of you inspired you to reach out for help.

As others comment here - THANK YOU for listening to - you! This post will save lives.
