Dr. Verrier’s life — one of passion to serve — to the last minutes of his life (refusing treatments known to help others) offers a concrete example of altruism. As our species reals from exponential loss(es) we honor Verrier’s life by reminding ourselves to be of service in what-ever manner we have the capacity to serve.
To live life so fully as to willingly navigate a balance between giving and receiving requires a life-long commitment to listen, learn and laugh in equal measure (as portrayed by Pascal’s account of Verrier’s life).
Bowing in gratitude for Pascal’s account(s) of Verrier’s call to follow his calling. May this post be an alarm-clock to wake us all up to honor all those who place their live(s) at risk to reduce pain and suffering.
